Day 49 - Tuesday 24th July - Auckland to Waipu Cove

Our route is now taking us to the Northlands of New Zealand.

We drove up the main highway number 1 out of the city and took a detour off through the towns of Silverdale and Orewa before rejoining the main highway.

Unfortunately the clouds are still very low so views are limited but at least the rain has been on and off rather than constantly on.

A view en route

We stopped in Puhoi for a rather muddy short walk to a lookout point over the village. The views were slightly limited due to the cloud though but it was still nice.

Next we took a detour to Mahurangi West with amazing views over the Mahurangi river and out to sea over all the little islands just off the coastline.

Our next stop was Warkworth for lunch and information, before heading off the main highways towards the east coast. We drove through Matakana and Leigh to see Goat Island.

Goat Island

From Goat Island viewing point we lost our way slightly and ended up driving for some time on narrow gravel roads until we got to Mangawhai.

In Mangawhai we picked up better roads driving to Waipu Cove with a brief stop on Langs Beach.

We enjoyed wandering for sometime on Waipu Cove as our campsite is on the sand dunes next to the beach.
