Day 29 - Wednesday 4th July - Havelock to Picton (South Island to North Island) to Wellington

Today was the day we would cross the Cook Straits on a Bluebridge vehicle ferry to the North Island of New Zealand.

We left Havelock in the pouring rain this morning to head to Picton where the ferry terminal is. The drive was alongside the Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds. Even though it was raining and low cloud it was a spectacular drive.

We wandered around the small town of and had lunch before boarding at 1pm.

The ferry trip was 3.5 hours but we did not disembark until gone 6pm, so it seemed a long trip! The ferry sails through the Queen Charlotte Sound before it heads out into Cook Strait, so we stood on deck for the first part of the journey to see the scenery but it was VERY COLD and windy up front.

On arrival in Wellington we just headed straight to a campsite for the night, slightly out of town in another smaller town called Porirua north of Wellington.

Tomorrow we will have the opportunity to see the delights of Wellington city.
