Day 64 - Wednesday 8th July - Hanmer Springs to Lake Brunner via Lewis Pass

All we could hear this morning was the sound of heavy rainfall as we woke :( Looking out of the window the cloud was very low and murky.

We had a short wander around the town of Hanmer Springs but it did not take long and the only other things to do here were all outdoors so we chose to drive on rather than get soaked to the skin.

Our drive took us through the Southern Alps at the Lewis Pass. As we headed over the pass the clouds had started lifting to reveal high mountain peaks with cloud still hugging the lower slopes of the mountains. It was beautiful!

We stopped briefly at Maruia Springs to have a short rest before continuing our journey west eventually to stop again at Reefton. Reefton is an old gold mining town as are most of the towns from here to the west coast, but we only stopped for lunch.

Our travels took us to Stillwater where we left the main highway to travel south to Lake Brunner, where we found a campsite in the village of Moana on the shoreline of the lake.

The lake is so peaceful and still, the reflections of the mountains and clouds in the lake spectacular. We had a wander around the lake to soak in the beauty and take photos!
